Book-like things, Paper devices

RISO Tunnel Books
a two-day workshop at
The Arm/The Circadian Press, Brooklyn, NY
Oct. 25 and 26, 11am-2pm

Come make a RISO printed tunnel book! Tunnel books are the VR of the Victorian era. Developed alongside the camera obscura and optics technology, tunnel books (or peep shows) feature a series of cut-paper panels placed one behind the other, creating the illusion of depth and perspective. We can create them with a simple accordion binding structure. They are essentially little paper worlds with scenery and depth that you can hold in your hand. Because they invite close examination, and RISO printing offers gorgeous texture, these two techniques seem made for each other, perhaps?

Day 1: You'll learn basic tunnel book construction, as well as the form's history. We'll go over various approaches of creating a 3-dimensional illustration.

Day 2: I will print everyone's RISO art and we'll assemble the art into books. If you don't have art to print, not to fear, I will provide RISO printed buildings, greenery, and people for you to arrange.
